As the camping season winds down in West Michigan, it’s time to start thinking about protecting your RV for the colder months ahead. Michigan winters can be harsh, and properly winterizing your RV helps prevent costly damage caused by freezing temperatures.
Whether you stayed with us this season or are already dreaming about your next visit to Holiday Camping Resort, taking a few important steps now will ensure your RV is ready to roll when spring arrives.
Why Winterizing Your RV Is So Important
When water freezes, it expands. If any water remains in your RV’s plumbing system, tanks, or lines, it can crack pipes, split fittings, and damage appliances. Repairs can quickly become expensive — but proper winterization prevents those headaches.
Michigan regularly sees freezing temperatures from late fall through early spring, so it’s important not to delay.
Step-by-Step RV Winterization Checklist
1. Drain All Water Systems
- Drain fresh water tanks
- Drain gray and black holding tanks
- Empty and flush the water heater
- Open all faucets and low-point drains
Make sure every water source is completely emptied before moving to the next step.
2. Bypass the Water Heater
Most RVs have a water heater bypass valve. Engaging this prevents antifreeze from filling the water heater tank, saving you several gallons of product.
3. Add RV Antifreeze
Use only non-toxic RV antifreeze. Pump antifreeze through the plumbing system until it runs pink from every faucet (hot and cold), shower head, and toilet.
Don’t forget outside showers if your RV has one.
4. Protect Drains and P-Traps
Pour a small amount of RV antifreeze down each drain to protect P-traps from freezing.
5. Remove and Store Batteries Properly
If possible, remove batteries and store them in a cool, dry location. Check charge levels periodically throughout winter.
6. Seal and Inspect Exterior
- Check roof seals and caulking
- Inspect slide seals
- Cover vents if needed
- Close propane valves
This is also a good time to clean the roof and exterior before storage.
Should You Cover Your RV?
In Michigan, a breathable RV cover can help protect against snow, ice, and debris. Make sure the cover is designed specifically for RV use to prevent moisture buildup.
Don’t Forget Interior Prep
- Remove all food
- Defrost and clean refrigerator
- Leave cabinet doors slightly open for airflow
- Use moisture absorbers to prevent mildew
